Protecting Your Property in Wildfire Season

Silver Star Membership Maps

The SSPOA has undertaken a mapping (GIS) project of the Silver Star properties, using recent Orthophoto data from August 2024. The maps are not only current photography but also show addresses and where our current members reside.  If your neighbour does not have a SSPOA symbol, why not ask them WHY??"

You can see these detailed Satellite photo maps at https://sspoa.ca/maps/

FireSmart Inventory Maps

The SSPOA FireSmart Committee has undertaken a visual assessment of the Silver Star properties to determine where the community currently stands in the ongoing efforts to make us all safer against the threat of wildfire.

This inventory was completed by Committee Volunteers and reflects their opinions as opposed to a formal FireSmart Assessment by a professional. The primary factors in their ratings include the number of trees on the lot, and the proximity of the dwelling to the wildfire interface.

The three categories of Green, Yellow and Red are pretty explanatory… we want GREEN! Should you disagree with the committee’s assessment feel free to contact them via email at firesmart@sspoa.ca or even more importantly, make the effort to make your property FireSmart. Consider your neighbours, remembering our slogan:

“Whoever owns the fuel, owns the fire!”

AND more on Rooftop Sprinklers
You will see a blue symbol on some lots which indicate that the owner has installed a rooftop sprinkler. These sprinklers can be seasonal, set up each spring or permanent, all of which are compliant to the RDNO bylaw of an external connection and not supplied by domestic water. In the event of a wildfire the firefighters would connect to the sprinkler bib at the side of the house with their structure protection pumps. Please consider installing one on your house.

If you would like to be included on the official Silver Star Fire Department's list that identifies which homes have a roof top sprinkler, please send the following information to: firesmart@sspoa.ca and we will coordinate with the Fire Department.

1. Name, Silver Star address, e-mail, phone number
2. Number of sprinklers
3. Location of sprinklers (ie - front, back, NW, SE, etc.)
4. Location of water hook up(s) (again, front, back, side, NE, SW, etc.)

This information will be invaluable to the Fire Department and will be included in the GIS mapping project that the SSPOA has created.

FireSmart Overview Map

The SSPOA has prepared a “DIRECTORY of CONTRACTORS” for Silver Star FireSmart Clearing and Rooftop Sprinkler Installation.  We’re sharing this list of contractors to help make things easier, but we’re not endorsing anyone in particular. The info is provided as-is, and we can’t guarantee the quality of work, pricing, or availability. Be sure to do your own research and make sure a contractor is the right fit for your needs. We’re not responsible for any issues that might come up from working with someone on the list—use it at your own discretion!

We are all looking forward to more sunshine but be aware that we are going into a very dry season this summer, where wildfire risk will be at the extreme.  Let's do everything we can to protect our homes and the beautiful resort that we play in.

Silver Star Property Owners Association
