2026 Risk of Fire

The Community of Silver Star Needs Your Assistance!

This coming season is setting up for, perhaps, the highest fire risk we have seen here at Silver Star.  Current situation is as follows:

  • Dry conditions in the Okanagan have persisted since 2022. (Source: Okanagan Basin Water Board Report, fall 2025)
  • Last summer the Okanagan had a drought level 4 rating (highest level is 5) lasting until the end of October. (Source: BC Drought Information Portal)
  • As of March 1st, the snowpack for Okanagan is 62% of normal. (Source: BC Snow Basin Indices Map)
  • The precipitation for the last 30 days (March 10) in the Okanagan has been 63.9% of median. (Source: BC Precipitation Conditions Map)

First off, we would like to thank all of you who have been working over the past few years to FireSmart your properties. This work, combined with the FireSmart work surrounding Silver Star and the road below have helped reduced the risk of fire.  We still a have lot of work to do.

It is critically important that we all focus on reducing the risk this spring given the current conditions.

For those who have already had a FireSmart assessment and have FireSmart their properties:

  1. Be sure to review the assessment and address any shortcomings.
  2. Re-assess your property ensuring there is no combustible material that will endanger your house or your neighbour’s house
  3. Ensure you are prepared to evacuate your property on short notice if there is a fire event.

For those who have not had an assessment and/or have not yet taken action to FireSmart their properties:

  1. Sign up for an assessment as soon as possible.  Home owners can sign up for all RDNO programs at www.rdno.ca/firesmart including the assessments.
  2. Review the FireSmart Guidelines and ensure you FireSmart your properties this spring.
  3. Ensure you are prepared to evacuate on short notice.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: If your property is not FireSmart, you are putting your neighbours and the community at risk. FireSmart will protect a community ONLY if all the properties have reduced the risk of ignition.

We will be scheduling a chipping event in early June to allow for disposal of materials. Please plan accordingly to have FireSmart work completed by end of May.

We will also be sending out more information this spring on FireSmart properties and what you need to do in the event of an evacuation. Please review this information and act on it.

Remember, it will take a community to save a community. Let’s all work together to reduce the risk of fire here at Silver Star.
